Well, japanese isn't an easy language.
I dunno how far you already are in learning it.
Usually, japanese TL are either japanese or study it in some kind of form.

The best start is to learn the roughly 1945 kanji which are a requirement for normal students.
The grammar is fairly easy - if you manage to learn all those kanji by heart, I guess the grammar won't be difficult. Usually, people try to teach both at the same time but if you do self-study ... get the kanji down. Either you have the ambition and manage it, or you don't and then you'd just waste your time learning the grammar

Good luck; I hadn't the ambition, gotta admit. Stopped halfway and decided to be content with not being a japanese TL also.
